The Volta River Authority (VRA) has taken proactive steps to support flood victims in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region. Teaming up with Smile 4 Ghana, a charitable NGO, they provided free dental health screenings for over 1,000 flood victims, including adults and children.

This three-day initiative, involving three dental surgeons from Smile 4 Ghana and one from VRA, targeted various towns and villages in the North Tongu District. Dr. Kwabena Omari Yeboah, the Medical Director of VRA Hospitals, emphasized the importance of such services, especially in areas lacking dental care facilities like the North Tongu District.

Last year, VRA provided essential support such as shelter and food during the floods. This year, they extended their assistance to include healthcare services, recognizing the ongoing needs of the affected communities. Smile 4 Ghana, based in the UK, contributed expertise and equipment to the program.

Dr. George Brown, Trustee for Smile 4 Ghana, highlighted the scarcity of dental professionals in Ghana compared to the population. He emphasized the necessity of collaborative efforts like this initiative to address the gap in dental healthcare.

The program addressed various dental conditions, including decayed teeth and gum diseases. Dr. Felicia Akuribire, Acting Medical Director of the Battor Catholic Hospital, stressed the urgent need for dental services in the district.

Local leaders, including Stephen Amegavi, the Assemblyman for Tekpo — Manya Electoral Area, commended VRA and Smile 4 Ghana for their educational health program. Many participants discovered unknown dental health issues through the screenings, underscoring the importance of such initiatives.

Moving forward, there are calls for sustained efforts in oral health education and regular screening programs to ensure the well-being of the community.
