ECG Acquires 450,000 New Smart Meters for Accra West

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Accra West Region, has announced the acquisition of 450,000 new meters for replacement in residential and industrial facilities. Over the next five months, ECG will replace post-paid, non-smart prepaid, and faulty meters with MMS-compliant smart prepaid meters. This initiative is part of the Company's Loss Reduction Programme (LRP), aimed at improving energy accounting and ensuring meter availability for service connection requests, thereby reducing system losses.

ECG has assured customers of the convenience these smart prepaid meters offer. With the new meters, customers can purchase credits from the comfort of their homes or anywhere by using the ECG Power App or the short code *226#.

While this move is seen as a positive step toward achieving ECG's objectives, there have been significant user complaints. Many customers have reported difficulties loading credit onto their meters due to frequent malfunctions and freezing issues with the ECG App. Additionally, problems with network connectivity persist, mirroring challenges faced with the old meters.

Businesses reliant on consistent power, such as barbershops and hair salons, have also reported operational disruptions due to these recurring issues. Moreover, some users have observed that the new meters seem to consume more power, raising concerns about their calibration and accuracy.

In response to these issues, there have been calls for the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) to conduct investigations to ensure the meters are correctly calibrated and that customers are not being overcharged. It is crucial for ECG to maintain service standards without compromising the project's objectives.

ECG must secure the old meters to prevent them from re-entering the system. As the economy faces high living costs and declining disposable incomes, ECG is urged to be sensitive to customers' challenges while pursuing revenue maximization. Ensuring functional meters and addressing localized power outages are vital to maintaining customer trust and service reliability.
