URGENT: Residents of Weija and Surrounding Areas Advised to Prepare for Impending Weija Dam Spillage
Ghana Water Limited (GWCL) issues a cautionary notice to residents of Weija and surrounding areas regarding an imminent spillage of the Weija Dam due to rising water levels amid the rainy season. The spillage is deemed necessary to safeguard the dam's integrity and downstream communities from potential risks. The rate of spillage will be determined by water inflow, and continuous monitoring will persist until the water level stabilizes.
In a recent announcement, the Ghana Water Limited (GWCL) has issued a cautionary notice to residents of Weija and its neighboring towns regarding an imminent spillage of the Weija Dam. This precautionary measure comes in response to the escalating water levels within the dam, coinciding with the onset of the rainy season.
According to a statement dated March 7, 2024, obtained by Graphic Online, the GWCL has underscored the urgent necessity for this action to preempt any potential risks to both the dam's integrity and downstream communities.
"We would like to emphasize that the spillage would continue as long as the level of water in the dam keeps rising. This is to safeguard the dam from any possible collapse," the statement elucidated.
Furthermore, the GWCL has asserted that continuous monitoring and spillage will persist until the water level stabilizes, aiming to mitigate the likelihood of a catastrophic dam failure.
The rate of spillage, as indicated by the GWCL, will be contingent upon the inflow of water into the dam. The company has also expressed regret for any inconvenience that may arise due to this essential exercise.
Attached to the announcement is a press statement from the Ghana Water Company Limited, reiterating the imperative nature of the spillage to avert potential hazards to lives and properties.
In light of this development, residents are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and that of their communities.
For further updates and information, residents are advised to stay tuned to official communications from the Ghana Water Limited and local authorities.

THRO: GENERAL MANAGER (OPS.), GHANA WATER LIMITED, HEAD OFFICE, ACCRA.
Dear Sir,
SPILLING OF EXCESS WATER FROM THE WEIJA DAM
This is to inform you that with the onset of the rains, the Weija Dam is gradually experiencing a rise in its water level and failure to commence immediate spilling may result in endangering lives and properties.
Even though we intend to start the spillage at a very low rate to minimize its effect downstream, the actual rate would be determined by the inflow of water into the dam.
We would like to emphasize that the spillage would continue as long as the level of water in the dam keeps rising. This is to safeguard the dam from any possible collapse.
We wish finally to express our regret for any inconvenience that may arise.
Yours faithfully,
