Revised Dates for WASSCE-SC 2024 Confirmed by Ghana Education Service

In a recent announcement, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially confirmed the revised dates for this year's West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates (WASSCE-SC). The examination, initially scheduled to commence from July 1 to August 31, 2024, will now be held from August 5 to September 27, 2024.

The alteration in the timetable was communicated to regional directors through a circular dated March 12, 2024, signed by the acting Director of the Schools and Instructions Division of the GES, Prince C. Agyemang-Duah. While no official reason was provided for the change, sources suggest it aims to afford candidates ample preparation time for the examination.

The circular urged all heads of senior high schools (SHSs) to take note of the updated schedule and ensure candidates are adequately prepared. It emphasized that the new date supersedes the earlier one communicated to the schools.

In response to queries, the Head of Public Affairs of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), John Kapi, confirmed the adjustment in dates. With this development, Ghana will proceed with the Ghana Only Version of the WASSCE-SC for the third consecutive time. This variant became necessary as the other member countries of WAEC—Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia—reverted to the May/June calendar post-COVID-19 pandemic.

Kapi clarified misconceptions surrounding the Ghana Only Version, emphasizing that despite the exclusivity, the examination process and conditions remain consistent with those of other member countries of WAEC.

The confirmation of the revised examination dates underscores the commitment of educational authorities to ensure a conducive environment for students undertaking these crucial assessments. As preparations intensify, stakeholders are encouraged to support candidates in their academic endeavors during this period.
