The President of the Ghana Institution of Surveyors (GhIS), Dr. Anthony Arko-Adjei, has issued a stern warning to Ghanaians to be vigilant of individuals falsely claiming to be qualified surveyors. Dr. Arko-Adjei emphasized that these untrained and unqualified individuals lack the necessary skills and qualifications to conduct surveying work, and they falsely represent themselves under the names of GhIS and the Licensed Surveyors Association of Ghana (LiSAG).

He advised the public to be cautious when hiring surveyors, noting that the GhIS has introduced professional stamps to distinguish legitimate surveyors from impostors. This move aims to help the public identify and hire properly trained and licensed surveyors.

Dr. Arko-Adjei's remarks were made during the closing ceremony of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) Working Week held in Accra, which attracted over 1,000 surveyors from 90 countries. The event focused on the theme "Your World, Our World: Resilient Environment and Sustainable Resource Management for All."

He highlighted the ongoing efforts of GhIS and LiSAG, in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, to pass the Surveying Council Bill, which has been pending for nearly 25 years. This legislation is intended to regulate the profession and eliminate unqualified practitioners. Currently, there is no law to hold these individuals accountable, as they often renounce membership when caught.

Samuel Larbi Darko, President of LiSAG, also addressed the conference, emphasizing the importance of sharing knowledge and best practices among surveyors to advance the profession globally. He noted that illegal mining poses significant environmental risks and that surveyors' expertise is crucial for proper land management and demarcation.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting the FIG's vision and investing in technologies and capacity building for the surveying sector. He outlined the government's initiatives, including an Urban Redevelopment Scheme and a National Geospatial Policy, aimed at promoting sustainable land use and urban development.
