First Batch of Liberian Refugees Departs from Gomoa Buduburam Camp
The first group of 750 Liberian refugees has departed from Gomoa Buduburam camp in Ghana, marking the beginning of a repatriation plan for 4,300 individuals by June. The camp, a refuge since 1990, is being closed as Liberia's government seeks to reintegrate its citizens.
The initial group of approximately 750 Liberian refugees residing at Gomoa Buduburam in the Central Region has departed for their home country. This movement marks the commencement of a larger repatriation effort slated to see 4,300 individuals return to Liberia between May and June this year.
The refugees, boarding 20 buses and accompanied by cargo vehicles carrying their personal belongings, were among those whose structures were recently demolished by traditional rulers at the camp. This action is part of a broader initiative by the Liberia Refugee Repatriation Resettlement Commission to bring their citizens back home.
Buduburam Refugee Camp
Established in 1990 by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the 144-acre Buduburam camp has been a sanctuary for more than 12,000 Liberian refugees who fled their country during the first and second Liberian civil wars, as well as Sierra Leonean refugees escaping their civil war.
Closure
During a pre-departure ceremony last week, Liberia's Deputy Minister of Legal Affairs, Jeddi Armah, led a government delegation to oversee the process. He emphasized that the return of the refugees would bring closure to their long-term presence in Ghana, noting that discussions around the repatriation had been ongoing since 2021.
"We have had fruitful engagements and discussions with the Ghanaian government throughout this period, and they have been giving us the necessary and needed support to undertake this exercise," Mr. Armah stated.
He encouraged the refugees to embrace the repatriation as an opportunity to rebuild their lives and contribute to the development of Liberia. He reassured them that the Liberian government had made adequate provisions for their smooth transition and reintegration.
Appreciation to Ghana
Mr. Armah also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the government and people of Ghana for their hospitality and support during the refugees' time of need and distress, highlighting the significance of this gesture in the spirit of African solidarity.
