The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced a two-day extension to the ongoing voter registration exercise, now set to conclude on Wednesday, May 29. Originally scheduled to end on May 27, the extension is aimed at compensating for the network issues that hampered the first two days of the exercise.

In a statement released yesterday, the EC emphasized their commitment to ensuring all eligible voters have the opportunity to register. "The Commission’s aim is to ensure that all eligible voters who wish to register are afforded the opportunity to do so," the statement read.

The EC is urging all eligible citizens who have not yet registered to visit the registration centers in their districts to secure their eligibility to vote in the upcoming December 7 elections.

The limited voter registration exercise, which commenced on May 7, aims to enroll 623,000 eligible individuals onto the electoral register. This 21-day initiative targets new voters who have turned 18 and those who have not previously registered.

The registration is being conducted across 1,053 centers, including 268 district offices and 785 additional centers in hard-to-reach areas, as agreed upon with political parties.

As of May 19, the EC reported 522,025 registered voters, with eight days remaining in the exercise. The Ashanti Region leads with 90,480 registered voters, representing 17.3% of the national total, followed by the Greater Accra Region with 74,420 registrants, or 14.3%.

Gender distribution among registered voters shows 246,455 males (47.21%) and 275,570 females (52.79%).

The Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa, reassured that all eligible persons would be registered, even if the numbers exceed the 623,000 target.

Following the registration exercise, the EC plans to conduct a nationwide operation to replace missing voter ID cards starting May 30. The provisional voter register will be submitted to political parties between July 9 and 18, 2024, with an exhibition period from July 15 to 24, 2024. The final voter register is expected to be released between August 30 and September 5, 2024.
