Ghana Armed Forces Issues Stern Warning After Attacks on Tema Naval Base

In a concerning development, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has issued a stern warning following a series of attacks on the Tema Naval Base and personnel. The incident, which unfolded on Friday evening, April 12, saw a mob targeting a naval vehicle and attempting to breach the base itself.

Reports indicate that a vehicle belonging to the Eastern Naval Command was damaged during a festival in Tema Newtown. Three naval personnel onboard sustained injuries and received treatment at the Tema Naval Base Medical Centre. Subsequently, three suspects involved in the initial attack were apprehended by naval personnel and handed over to the Tema Newtown District Police.

However, the situation took a more severe turn later that night when a mob, believed to be festival participants, launched an attack on the Tema Naval Base. In response, warning shots were fired in a bid to protect sensitive installations and repel the assault. Tragically, local authorities have confirmed that two civilians were taken to the Tema General Hospital and later succumbed to their injuries, though investigations into the cause of death are ongoing.

The turmoil continued into Saturday, April 13, with further attacks targeting both the Tema Naval Base and the Biekro Barracks in Tema Newtown, resulting in property damage.

In response to these alarming events, the GAF, in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, has launched a comprehensive investigation. While extending condolences to the bereaved families, the GAF has urged all parties to maintain calmness as investigations progress.

Nevertheless, the GAF concluded its press release with a firm message directed towards the youth of Tema, warning that any further assaults on their installations or personnel will be met with the appropriate response.
