Fake ECG Workers Convicted and Fined in Accra

An electrician and a mason have been convicted and fined GH¢1,200 each by the Accra Circuit Court for impersonating Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) workers and extorting money from customers. Nana Adu Gyamfi, 33, and Derrick Ntow Adumah, 22, will serve six months in prison if they default on the fine.

The duo pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit a crime, intentionally or knowingly interfering with suppliers’ distribution, defrauding by false pretences, and stealing an ECG meter.

Appearing before Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah, the court heard from the Director of Prosecution for ECG, Mr. Paul Asibi Abarigah, that Gyamfi and Adumah devised a scheme to collect between GH¢20 and GH¢50 from customers under the pretense of addressing illegal connections.

The complainant, Gabriel Akinade, District Technical Officer of ECG in Dansoman, reported that the convicts, residents of Dansoman, Accra, went to Zone Six on March 25, 2024, and introduced themselves to Margaret Donkor and other customers as ECG employees on a meter monitoring operation. They disconnected and removed an installed ECG meter number P35765641 from a house over an alleged illegal connection and demanded money from the customers.

The convicts were arrested and taken to the Dansoman ECG office. During investigations by the ECG Investigations Unit, reflective jackets, a flat board with the ECG logo, screwdrivers, a voltmeter, and ECG meters with serial numbers P35774560 and P35765641 were found in their possession. Both men admitted to the offense in their caution statements, with Gyamfi claiming that Adumah had introduced him to the scheme.
