Collapse of School Pavilion Puts Pupils in Danger
Twenty pupils narrowly escape death as the pavilion serving as their classroom collapses during a heavy downpour at Zamboree D/A Basic School in the Assin North District. The incident highlights the urgent need for infrastructure support and completion of abandoned projects.
In a harrowing incident at the Zamboree D/A Basic School in Ghana's Assin North District, twenty pupils had a narrow escape from tragedy when the pavilion serving as their classroom collapsed amid a heavy downpour.
Last week Monday, relentless rainfall coupled with strong winds triggered the collapse of the structure shortly after the pupils were evacuated to safety. Jacob Tetteh Agbeko, Chairman of the School Management Committee (SMC), revealed that the affected classrooms housed pupils from classes two and five.
Sensing the looming danger posed by the dilapidated pavilion, vigilant teachers promptly instructed the pupils to relocate to other classrooms. Their quick action proved crucial as moments after the evacuation, the pavilion succumbed to the elements, ensnaring the students' belongings including books and bags.
Despite efforts to ensure continuity in education by merging affected classes with others, the incident has disrupted effective teaching and learning. Urgent intervention from government bodies, the district assembly, and charitable organizations is now imperative to address the precarious situation.
In a related plea, concerned parents implored authorities to expedite the completion of a six-unit classroom block initiated in 2013. Left abandoned, the unfinished structure has become a breeding ground for reptiles and poses a grave threat to the safety of the students.
Thomas Yogarim, the area's assembly member, has alerted the Assin North National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and is awaiting assessment and assistance to mitigate the repercussions of this alarming event.
