Parliamentary Committee Tours Devastated Coastline in Volta Region
Members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Works and Housing visit Keta, Ketu South Municipality, and Anloga District in the Volta Region to assess the damage caused by tidal waves and inspect ongoing sea defense projects.
Members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Works and Housing embarked on a tour to Keta, Ketu South Municipality, and Anloga District in the Volta Region to assess the aftermath of tidal waves wreaking havoc on the coastal communities.
The committee, led by Chairman Isaac Kwame Asiamah, inspected the ongoing sea defense project along the coastline. Asiamah emphasized the urgent need for immediate action to safeguard the coast, stressing the severe threat posed to communities and livelihoods by erosion.
Highlighting the dire situation in areas like Abutiakope, Asiamah underscored the importance of governmental intervention to prevent further devastation along the coast. He emphasized the rich historical and cultural heritage attached to these communities, urging pragmatic steps to preserve them.
However, concerns were raised by MP Emmanuel Kwesi Bedzra regarding the allocation of funds for the sea defense project. Bedzra questioned the need for additional funds when a substantial amount had already been allocated for feasibility studies. He also criticized the lack of a competitive bidding process for the project.
MP Richard Kwami Sefe reiterated the call for action, urging the Volta River Authority (VRA) to dredge the estuary in southern Volta to mitigate flood risks. MP Dzifa Gomashie pledged continued advocacy in parliament until a solution is implemented.
The visit, initiated by Speaker Alban Bagbin in response to pleas from affected MPs, underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for governmental intervention to address coastal erosion in the Volta Region.
