Final-Year Junior High School Students to Write New Subjects in 2024 BECE

In a significant development for education in Ghana, final-year Junior High School (JHS) students across the country are set to tackle three new subjects in this year's Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School Candidates. The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced the inclusion of Career Technology, Creative Art and Design, and Arabic as part of the examination lineup.

Expanded Curriculum

Career Technology and Creative Art and Design, derived from the previous Basic Design and Technology (BDT), will be mandatory for all candidates. However, Arabic will be offered as an optional subject for candidates in Islamic basic schools.

Extended Examination Schedule

Due to the introduction of these new subjects, the BECE for 2024 will span six days instead of the previous five. Scheduled from Monday, July 8, 2024, to Monday, July 15, 2024, the examination aims to accommodate the additional subjects effectively.

Preparation and Logistics

Mr. John Kapi, the Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, shed light on the council's readiness for the upcoming examination. He emphasized that WAEC had completed candidate registration and was now in the process of organizing the breakdown of subjects. Furthermore, sample questions have been distributed to schools and made available on the council's website. Printing of examination materials is set to commence shortly.

Timetable Highlights

According to the official timetable released by WAEC, candidates will undertake English Language and Religious and Moral Education on Monday, July 8, 2024. Tuesday, July 9, 2024, will feature Science and Computing, followed by Social Studies and Creative Art and Design on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. Mathematics and Ghanaian Language are scheduled for Thursday, July 11, 2024, while French and Career Technology will be examined on Friday, July 12, 2024. Finally, Arabic will be administered on Monday, July 15, 2024.

Curriculum Transition

This year's BECE candidates will mark the inaugural batch to sit the examination under the Common Core Curriculum. With a focus on enhancing learning experiences and shifting away from rote learning towards critical learning skills, the new curriculum aims to elevate the quality of education in Ghana.

The introduction of these new subjects and the adaptation to the Common Core Curriculum signify a progressive step in Ghana's education system. As students prepare for the 2024 BECE, educators and policymakers are optimistic about the positive impact these changes will have on the academic landscape of the nation.
