The 5th annual Convention of District 418 Ghana of Lions International has concluded in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, with a unanimous decision by delegates to hold the 6th Convention next year in Ho, Volta Region.

The applause, dancing, singing, and general jubilation that followed the motion and secondment demonstrated the members' enthusiasm for traveling to other regional capitals to experience diverse cultures and enjoy the programs.

The Kumasi Convention saw the attendance of approximately 500 association members. The Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson, delivered the keynote address, while the Amakomhene, Nana Adu Mensah Asare, addressed delegates as the Special Guest of Honour.

Held over three days at Block 'C' of the KNUST Business School, the convention revolved around the theme, "Fostering Unity and Friendship for Sustainable Membership Growth." The District Governor, Lion Kate Baaba Hudson (PMJF), who is a former Editor of the Junior Graphic and former Foreign Editor of the Daily Graphic, presided over the event.

In her address, Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson commended District 418 Ghana Lions for their impactful activities over the years, including disaster relief, health and well-being, environmental sustainability, youth development, and community development. She highlighted how these efforts have significantly transformed the lives of the vulnerable in society. "You have succeeded in making significant contributions to improving the lives of millions of people around the world. By your activities, you continue to emphasize what the real meaning of success in life is all about," she remarked.

The Amakomhene, Nana Mensah Asare, lauded the Lions for their humanitarian roles and expressed his willingness to continue collaborating with them on environmental and other humanitarian issues.

Presenting her report, District Governor Lion Kate Baaba Hudson announced the district's prompt response to the Akosombo Dam spillage, mobilizing resources and providing aid to the affected residents. She also mentioned that support was sought and received from the international unit, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), which further aided the victims.

The District currently has a membership of 1,300, with plans to add about 70 more members before the end of the service year on June 30, 2024. During the period under review, the district formed an additional club, Hohoe Unique Lions Club, and presented its charter, officially welcoming it into the Lions Family.

Lion Baaba Hudson, a former Editor of the Business Desk of the Daily Graphic and former acting Editor of The Mirror, noted increased interest in leadership training programs among members. She highlighted significant strides in marketing, enhancing brand awareness, and ensuring consistency across communication channels.

The District was also honored as the Best Humanitarian Group of the Year at the 8th Exclusive Men of the Year (EMY) Africa Awards ceremony held in October last year.

The convention concluded with the installation of the First Vice District Governor, Lion Dr. Helena Asamoah Hassan, as the District Governor Elect for the next Lions Service Year.
