In a recent gathering hosted by the Creative Arts Agency (CAA) in Accra, Ghanaian Disc Jockeys (DJs) unleashed their pent-up frustration over what they perceive as a consistent lack of respect from artists within the music industry. The event, titled DJs Exclusive Roundtable: A Strategic Discussion on Ghana’s Music Airplay, served as a platform for DJs to voice their grievances and advocate for their rightful place in the industry.

The meeting, chaired by Gyankroma Akufo-Addo, the Executive Secretary of CAA, aimed to facilitate dialogue about the DJs' role in the PlayGhana initiative and the potential impact of the Broadcasting Bill Amendment on their profession. However, it quickly evolved into a forum for DJs to demand recognition and address longstanding grievances.

Expressing their discontent, the DJs highlighted instances where they felt marginalized by artists whom they had supported throughout their careers. Many DJs lamented being treated as mere stepping stones to success by artists who, once they achieved fame, disregarded the contributions of DJs to their rise in the industry.

One particularly vocal DJ, known as AD DJ, challenged the prevailing notion among artists that they could overlook the importance of DJs in promoting their music. He emphasized the need for a mutually beneficial relationship between DJs and artists, arguing that genuine collaboration is essential for the success of initiatives like PlayGhana.

Echoing these sentiments, DJ Slim criticized the growing perception among artists that social media influencers hold more sway in determining the success of their songs than DJs. He urged artists to recognize the pivotal role DJs play in shaping the music landscape and to accord them the respect they deserve.

Despite their grievances, DJ Vyrusky of Lynx Entertainment urged his colleagues not to dwell excessively on the negatives, emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus on advancing the PlayGhana agenda. He called on the CAA to adopt a holistic approach to the initiative, ensuring that all stakeholders, including DJs, benefit equitably.

In conclusion, the roundtable discussion underscored the pressing need for artists to acknowledge and respect the indispensable role played by DJs in the music industry. It served as a rallying cry for greater collaboration and mutual appreciation among all key players, with the goal of fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for Ghanaian music.
