Teachers in Volta Region Demand Government Action on Unpaid Allowances

Last Friday, May 3rd, witnessed a significant display of solidarity as educators from various corners of the Volta Region congregated in Ho for a peaceful demonstration. Donning striking red shirts, members of prominent teacher associations such as the Ghana National Association of Ghana (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana (CCT-GH) took to the streets to advocate for the long-overdue payment of several critical allowances by the government.

Marching from the Ho Central Market through the bustling thoroughfares of the regional capital, the educators culminated their protest at the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC). There, they submitted a formal petition to the Regional Coordinating Director, Mr. Augustus Awity, in the absence of the Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, who was away on official duties.

The petition, spearheaded by leaders of the teacher unions including GNAT's Regional Secretary, Kassim Seidu Baba, NAGRAT's Regional Chairman, David Gellie, and CCT-GH's Regional Chairman, Solomon Takyi, highlighted the government's failure to honor negotiated allowances dating back to 2009. Alongside the much-needed deprived area allowance, the petition emphasized the unresolved issues of extra assessment, book/data/online, and the adjustment of continuous professional development allowances.

Expressing the dire economic challenges faced by educators, exacerbated by the harsh national economic climate, the petition underscored the need for urgent action from the authorities. It warned that failure to address their demands by May 13, 2024, would prompt escalated measures from the teacher unions.

In response, Mr. Augustus Awity lauded the demonstrators for their peaceful conduct and assured them that their petition would be promptly delivered to the Regional Minister upon his return.

As teachers across the Volta Region unite to advocate for their rights, their unwavering resolve sends a resounding message to authorities, emphasizing the critical importance of addressing their grievances without delay.
