Veteran Ghanaian Actor Fred Amugi Speaks Out on Actors Guild Issues

Veteran Ghanaian actor Fred Amugi has voiced his concerns regarding the persistent litigation surrounding the leadership of the Actors Guild of Ghana, which he believes is impeding the progress of the country's movie industry.

Amugi lamented the absence of effective leadership within the guild since the passing of President Reverend Eddie Coffie in 2016. The prolonged delay in holding elections for new executives has left the guild without direction, hindering its ability to manage industry affairs and advocate for the welfare of actors.

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz on Monday, May 20, 2024, Amugi emphasized the urgent need for the guild to resolve its internal conflicts and regain stability.

"The film industry is like any other business. It has its ups and downs. However, for the past few years, it's been having issues of power struggles and conflicts, especially within the Ghana Actors Guild," Amugi remarked.

He highlighted the decline in productivity and quality due to unchecked production, underscoring the importance of platforms like Akwaaba Magic on DStv in supporting Ghanaian films. Amugi expressed the need for collaboration within the industry to catch up with Nigeria's thriving film industry, which enjoys more opportunities with streaming services like Netflix.

Amugi also addressed the lack of cooperation among industry stakeholders, noting that fear of plagiarism has led to a fragmented approach to filmmaking. He urged unity among filmmakers to leverage their diverse talents and perspectives in creating exceptional films that could compete globally.

"The film industry in Ghana needs unity. Currently, everyone is working alone because they're afraid of being copied. The truth, however, is that no matter how much we know, someone else always knows more. If we work together in unity, we could make great films that showcase our different talents and perspectives," Amugi stressed.

He expressed optimism that with unity, Ghanaian filmmakers could achieve recognition in prestigious awards such as the Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA).

Amugi's candid remarks reflect the pressing need for cohesion and leadership within the Actors Guild of Ghana to revitalize the country's movie industry and position it for sustained growth and success.
