Sub-Saharan Africa Students Shine at Huawei ICT Competition in Shenzhen
ICT students from Sub-Saharan Africa excelled at the 8th Huawei ICT Competition Global Final in Shenzhen, China, claiming the most prizes among all participating regions.
The prizes were distributed as follows:
- Grand Prize (4 teams): Nigeria Cloud Team 2, Nigeria Computing Team, Tanzania Network Team, Uganda Network Team 1
- First Prize (6 teams): Kenya Network Team 1, Kenya Network Team 2, Nigeria Network Team 1, Nigeria Network Team 2, Uganda Network Team 2, Nigeria Cloud Team 1
- Second Prize (3 teams): Madagascar Network Team, Kenya Computing Team 1, Uganda Computing Team
- Third Prize (5 teams): Kenya Cloud Team 1, Kenya Cloud Team 2, Kenya Computing Team 2, Ghana – Farm Choice (Innovation Track), South Africa – ATS (Innovation Track)
- Women in Tech Award (2 teams): Uganda Network Team 2, Kenya Cloud Team 2
The 2023-2024 ICT Competition attracted over 170,000 students from more than 2,000 universities and colleges across 80+ countries, making it the largest offline competition since its inception in 2015. Over 160 teams, comprising more than 470 contestants from 49 countries, advanced to the global final in Shenzhen after excelling in their respective national and regional competitions.
During the Huawei ICT Competition 2023-2024 Global Final Closing & Award Ceremony, Dr. Mrs. Olayinka Taibat Jinadu, a professor at the University of Ibadan and coach of the Grand Prize-winning Nigeria Cloud Team 2, emphasized the importance of bridging the gap between academia and industry application. Samuel Kinuthia Kariuki, professor at Zetech University and coach of the Second Prize-winning Kenya Computing Team 1, highlighted the competition's role in equipping students with employable skills.
Vhutshilo Maeba from the University of Venda, whose team earned Third Prize for a road safety innovation, shared that the competition expanded her technical thinking and career possibilities.
Several country representatives, including Dr. Esther Thaara Muoria from Kenya's Ministry of Education and Oliver Wonekha, Uganda’s Ambassador to China, attended the event, acknowledging the competition's impact on student development and corporate social responsibility.
Huawei's executives, including Zhou Hong, President of Huawei's Institute of Strategic Research, and Peng Honghua, President of Huawei’s ICT Strategy and Business
Development Department, addressed the finalists, underscoring the significance of making digital technologies accessible to all and the competition's role in fostering global ICT talent.
In conjunction with the competition, Huawei hosted the ICT Accelerating Education Transformation Summit, awarding 24 instructors the title of Huawei ICT Academy Global Most Valuable Instructor for their contributions to talent development.
The Huawei ICT Competition, part of the Seeds for the Future 2.0 initiative, aims to enhance students' ICT knowledge, practical skills, and innovation capabilities, promoting technological advancement and digital inclusion worldwide. Since 2016, Huawei has established 478 ICT academies in Sub-Saharan Africa, involving over 100,000 students and 1,500 teachers.
With this strong performance at the global final, Sub-Saharan Africa continues to demonstrate its growing influence and potential in the global ICT landscape.
