Enterprise Computing Ltd. Partners with Microsoft and Korle-Bu to Advance Healthcare in Ghana

In a groundbreaking initiative, Enterprise Computing Ltd. (ECL), in collaboration with Microsoft and Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, is set to revolutionize medical research and specialized healthcare delivery in underserved regions of Ghana. This partnership introduces mobile 3D Telemedicine (3DTM) intervention, positioning Ghana as the first West African country to adopt this cutting-edge technology.

Patients from rural areas in Ghana often face significant challenges in accessing post-operative care and follow-ups at Korle-Bu due to the long distances involved. Addressing this issue, a surgeon from Canniesburn Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit in Scotland collaborated with Microsoft Research to leverage their holoportation technology. This innovative solution streams live 3D content of patients to remote clinicians for real-time consultations, facilitating pre- and post-operative care without requiring patients to travel.

The mobile 3DTM unit, housed in a van and operated by a dedicated team of technicians and engineers, brings advanced medical capabilities directly to underserved regions. This initiative enables comprehensive healthcare services, including essential pre-operative and post-operative consultations, overcoming previous logistical barriers. By providing on-site evaluations, the technology ensures timely hospital visits for necessary procedures.

Initiated in 2020, the project aimed to establish the first system at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. However, the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a pivot, resulting in the initial system installation in Glasgow for testing. In November 2023, the team successfully set up the first 3DTM technology in Accra, Ghana, marking a significant milestone in international collaboration for pre-op consultation and surgery.

Microsoft Research has partnered with ECL to provide on-ground technical support and expand the technology's use cases beyond plastic surgeries to other medical fields. This collaboration aims to drive innovation in specialized healthcare delivery.

During a visit to their Tema office, Sybil Amoah Osafo, Chief Technology Officer of ECL, expressed the firm's commitment to ensuring accessible healthcare for everyone, regardless of their location. She emphasized, "Our team will work at ensuring a reliable experience and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the mobile 3DTM initiative."

Microsoft Research Technical Lead, Spencer Fowers, commended ECL's dedication to the project, stating, "We are really impressed with ECL’s desire to help with this project. We are confident that ECL will be able to enhance the use cases of 3DTM and develop feature updates to improve the system and increase its use. We look forward to more collaborations with ECL."

Additionally, the team explored integrating ECL's AI-based Visual Impairment Detection Application, a machine learning module for early detection of eye conditions such as Retinopathy in diabetic patients, to further enhance medical services in deprived communities.

This collaboration underscores ECL’s commitment to investing in innovative solutions that address critical healthcare challenges in Africa.
