Former President John Dramani Mahama, also the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has extended a message of encouragement to all eligible voters, particularly first-timers who faced obstacles during the initial phase of the nationwide limited voters registration exercise.

In a Facebook post, Mahama empathized with those who encountered difficulties on the first day of the registration, assuring them that setbacks shouldn't deter them from participating in the electoral process. He urged them to revisit the Electoral Commission (EC) offices and selected Electoral Areas to complete their registration, emphasizing the importance of their participation for driving change in Ghana.

The registration process encountered a rocky start last Tuesday, with a system failure delaying the commencement until after 12 noon. This setback led to minimal registration figures at many centers, as frustrated prospective registrants had left by the time the technical issues were resolved.

Scenes of chaos and frustration marred the registration centers, prompting a high-level technical meeting of the EC to address the challenges. Despite the subsequent resolution of the technical issues, many eligible voters had to leave without completing the registration process.

The EC attributed the delays to technical challenges with internet connectivity at several registration centers. However, it assured the public that the issues had been resolved, and the registration exercise was proceeding smoothly in most centers across the country.

Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the Director of Electoral Services at the EC headquarters, confirmed the resolution of technical challenges and reiterated that the registration process would continue for 21 days. The commission aims to register 623,000 eligible individuals, including those who have turned 18 since the last registration exercise in 2023.

Despite the initial hurdles, visits to registration centers in the Greater Accra Region indicated a smoother process. Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of the NDC's flag bearer, expressed satisfaction with the ongoing exercise during her visit to the Ayawaso West Wuogon Centre and the University of Professional Studies, Accra. However, she lamented the technical challenges experienced on the first day of the exercise, acknowledging the inconvenience it caused to prospective registrants.

Mahama's message of perseverance echoes the sentiment of many, emphasizing the importance of active participation in the electoral process for a vibrant democracy. As the registration process continues, stakeholders remain hopeful for a smoother and more inclusive experience for all eligible voters.
