Heavy Rain and Winds Cause Flooding and Destruction in Accra and Tema

Yesterday, Accra and Tema experienced heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds, leading to flooding and destruction in various parts of the capital city and its environs.

The downpour resulted in impassable roads, with some areas experiencing serious gridlocks as floodwaters inundated streets and disrupted traffic flow. The aftermath of the storm left debris scattered along roads and in gutters.

Destruction and Damage

The strong winds brought down billboards, trees, and high tension poles in several areas. Two billboards on the Korle Bu road collapsed, with one falling near the Bukom Boxing Arena. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Near the Landing Restaurant at Kotoka International Airport, two vehicles were severely damaged by falling trees.

Emergency services, including personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, responded swiftly to clear debris and assist affected individuals. However, the destruction caused significant delays and inconvenience to commuters.

Flooding Woes

Areas such as the Ghana Revenue Authority Office opposite the Accra Academy, First Light, Kaneshie, and the Obestebi Lamptey Circle experienced flooding, exacerbating traffic congestion. Homes and shops around the Obestebi Lamptey Circle underpass were inundated with floodwaters.

In Tema, the heavy winds toppled high tension poles belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana in the Kpone Katamansao Municipality, leading to power outages in affected areas.

Response and Weather Warning

The Ghana Meteorological Agency had issued a weather warning prior to the downpour, alerting residents of the southern part of the country to expect thunderstorms and heavy rain. The warning highlighted high-risk areas, including Accra and its surrounding areas, urging residents to take precautions.

The Electricity Company of Ghana dispatched engineers to assess the damage and assured affected residents of efforts to restore power supply promptly.

As communities grapple with the aftermath of the storm, calls for expedited construction works and improved drainage systems echo among affected residents and business owners.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of extreme weather events.
