Domelevo Urges President Akufo-Addo for Government Reforms

Former Auditor General Daniel Domelevo has urged President Akufo-Addo to implement significant reforms to bolster public confidence in the political system and avert potential unrest similar to the situation in Kenya.

Mr. Domelevo stressed that these reforms should begin with a reduction in the size of President Akufo-Addo's government. In his remarks, Domelevo highlighted the current hardships faced by Ghanaians and stressed the need for the President to demonstrate strong leadership by addressing the public's concerns.

He warned that without decisive action, Ghana risks experiencing unrest akin to the violent protests in Kenya, which have led to at least thirty-nine deaths. Speaking at the 2024 Domelevo Accountability Lecture in Accra, Domelevo advised President Akufo-Addo to consider adopting some of the measures being implemented by Kenya's President William Ruto to prevent similar issues in Ghana.

He underscored the importance of proactive and effective governance in maintaining stability and public trust. He added that his call for action reflects growing concerns about political and economic stability in Ghana, with a focus on ensuring that the government's response to current challenges is both effective and empathetic to the needs of its citizens.

“If only President William Ruto would have been minded last year or even early this year to do the things that he’s doing today, I think he would have been a hero. But now, even if he cuts his throat for them, people will not appreciate it. It is too late.”

“The question we want to ask is the other African leaders including our own President [Akufo-Addo], has he taken a note from it? It would have been so heartwarming for us to hear from the President.

“Given the heat in the country and what I have heard from somewhere, I will reduce my cabinet or ministers to 40. If the President starts to do some of these things, I think it will help to calm nerves. It’s never too late, those who have the ears of the President, it’s never too late to repent and do the right thing,” he said.
