Dr. Bawumia Vows to Abolish E-Levy and Betting Tax if Elected in 2024

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has firmly reiterated his commitment to abolish the controversial E-Levy and betting tax if elected President in the 2024 general elections. Speaking at the NPP’s manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday, August 18, Dr. Bawumia outlined his administration's vision for comprehensive tax reforms aimed at reducing the financial burden on Ghanaians.

Among the key measures proposed, Dr. Bawumia announced a tax amnesty for previous years’ unpaid taxes, alongside waivers on interest and penalties for unfiled taxes. These reforms, he believes, will provide much-needed relief to individuals and businesses, giving them a fresh start in their tax obligations.

He also detailed strategies to position Ghana as a global digital leader, emphasizing the need for policies, competitive incentives, and strategic investments that would transform the nation into a world-class digital economy. “We will fast-track Ghana’s transformation into Africa’s digital hub through strategic policies, incentives, and investments. This includes investing in local talent and tech start-ups while abolishing the E-Levy,” he stated.

Dr. Bawumia also promised broad tax reforms, including a significant change to the Value Added Tax (VAT) system. The reform would consolidate all levies into a single line item treated as part of input and output VAT, thereby eliminating the cascading effect of the current regime. Additionally, he proposed a reduction of Withholding Tax for small-scale gold exports to 1% in a bid to curb smuggling and abolish the Betting Tax altogether.

Beyond tax reforms, Dr. Bawumia pledged to establish a more business-friendly environment if elected in the upcoming 2024 elections. He highlighted his unwavering commitment to boosting and expanding the private sector, noting that his administration would prioritize policies that accelerate business growth and spur economic development across the country.

As the 2024 general elections approach, Dr. Bawumia's promises of tax reforms and digital transformation will be critical points of discussion among voters and stakeholders alike.
