Accra Technical University and Vanuatu Trade Commission Sign $1 Million MoU for AI and Research Training
Accra Technical University (ATU) partners with Vanuatu Trade Commission (VTC) to secure a $1 million grant aimed at training students and staff in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Applied Research.
The Accra Technical University (ATU) and the Vanuatu Trade Commission (VTC) in Ghana have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide an estimated grant of $1 million. This grant aims to train students and staff in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Applied Research.
This MoU is part of a broader partnership between the commission and the African Diaspora Central Bank (ADCB) to provide free AI training for young people across Africa, beginning with Ghana.
A significant aspect of this collaboration is the establishment of a dedicated AI training center at ATU. The center will train 2,000 students and staff at a cost of $250 per participant, totaling $500,000. Additionally, there is a stimulus package of $100 per participant, amounting to $200,000, making the total sponsorship cost $700,000 for the AI training program.
Furthermore, the commission will provide a seed fund of $200,000 to support the ATU Research Innovation Funds (ARIF). This fund will award grants to staff, students, and researchers with innovative applied research projects, fostering the advancement of science and technology within the university community.
Harnessing AI Potential
The acting Vice-Chancellor of ATU, Professor Amevi Acakpovi, highlighted the importance of the MoU, noting that it represents a pivotal moment for both institutions. "At ATU, we believe in the transformative power of technology to drive innovation, solve complex problems, and improve lives. Through this partnership, we are committed to harnessing the potential of AI to address pressing challenges and foster sustainable development in our respective regions," he said.
Prof. Acakpovi expressed his gratitude to the Vanuatu Trade Commission for its commitment and vision in leveraging AI for positive change across Africa. He also extended appreciation to the faculty, staff, and students for their dedication to advancing AI education and Applied Research in Ghana.
Shared Commitment
The Vanuatu Trade Commissioner to Ghana, Prof. Hugh Keku Aryee, emphasized the shared commitment to innovation, education, and technological advancement signified by the union between the two institutions. "With this partnership, we are not only embracing the future but also making history. Accra Technical University should be proud to be the first university in Ghana to enter into such a significant agreement, marking a milestone in our journey towards excellence in AI education and adoption," he said.
The signing ceremony was attended by the acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor of ATU, Prof. Felix Klutsanedzie; Registrar of the university, Dr. Sylvia B.
