Office of the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, has issued a response to a recent article published by Graphic Online regarding his potential involvement in the nomination process for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) running mate.
In a rejoinder dated February 13, 2024, and signed by the Secretary of the Asogli Council, Stephen Tetteh, it was confirmed that Togbe Afede had indeed been approached by a group regarding the selection of the running mate.
Tetteh clarified, "Many individuals and groups have approached Togbe over the years, urging him to leave chieftaincy and take a more active role in the political leadership of the country. Togbe's consistent response has been that there are ample avenues for Chiefs and Queens in the country to legally contribute to national development."
He further elaborated, "A group identifying themselves as the 'Change Makers Forum' were the most recent to approach Togbe, urging him to consider joining President Mahama as his running mate for the 2024 Presidential election. Togbe responded that, as a patriotic citizen, he would not turn down any opportunity to serve the country. However, he emphasized that the choice of a running mate ultimately rests with the flag bearer, who already knows him well."
The statement expressed Togbe Afede's gratitude for the trust placed in him by the "Change Makers Forum" and their desire for him to be the next Vice President of Ghana. However, it clarified that Togbe had not authorized anyone or any group to lobby for his selection as running mate.
The Asogli State Council apologized to the chiefs, kingmakers, and people of Asogli, as well as all others affected, for any discomfort caused.
"The office of the Agbogbomefia maintains an open-door policy and welcomes communication, feedback, and inquiries from all citizens and stakeholders. We encourage individuals or groups to reach out directly on any matters, concerns, or suggestions requiring attention," the statement concluded.
Meanwhile, the race for the NDC running mate position continues to intensify, with names like former Minister of Education, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, and others being considered. Former President John Mahama is expected to announce his choice later this month or early March amid significant lobbying from various quarters within the party and beyond.
