Alec Baldwin Trial: Prosecutors Detail Pattern of Recklessness with Firearms on "Rust" Set

In a significant development ahead of Alec Baldwin's trial for involuntary manslaughter in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, prosecutors have outlined a series of incidents to argue a pattern of recklessness with firearms on the set of the film "Rust."

According to a filing on Monday by prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Erlinda Johnson, Baldwin allegedly fired a blank round at a crew member while using them to establish a line of sight. They further accused Baldwin of engaging in "horseplay" with a revolver during training sessions and described his behavior as "erratic and aggressive" during filming, which raised serious safety concerns.

The filing aims to introduce "other acts" evidence, suggesting that Baldwin's alleged carelessness extended beyond the tragic incident that led to Hutchins' death. This evidence, much of which surfaced during the trial of Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the film's armorer, includes footage showing Baldwin directing crew members with his revolver and disregarding industry safety rules by keeping his finger on the trigger.

Prosecutors also allege that Baldwin displayed impatience on set, rushing crew members to reload quickly between takes, and unnecessarily cocking and un-cocking his firearm, actions that they argue contributed to lapses in safety protocols.

Furthermore, the filing asserts that Baldwin resisted adhering to industry safety standards when filming resumed for "Rust" in Montana, approximately 18 months after the fatal shooting in New Mexico.

The introduction of this evidence serves to notify Baldwin's defense team of the prosecution's intended arguments, allowing them an opportunity to object. Prosecutors contend that this evidence is relevant to establishing Baldwin's state of mind and his approach to firearm safety, crucial elements in the case against him.

In response to earlier assertions by the prosecution regarding Baldwin's past aggressive behavior, including prior incidents unrelated to the Hutchins case, Morrissey clarified that such episodes would not be raised during the trial.

Alec Baldwin, who maintains his innocence and denies pulling the trigger of the revolver that caused Hutchins' death, has chosen not to comment on the latest developments through his attorneys.

Baldwin's trial is scheduled to begin on July 9 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, amidst continued scrutiny over the events leading to the tragic shooting on the set of "Rust."
