The Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council has launched the 25th-anniversary celebration of the enstoolment of Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, the 35th occupant of the Ofori Panin Stool. Succeeding his uncle, Osagyefuo Kuntunkunuku, who passed away in 1999, Okyenhene Osagyefuo has been a pivotal figure in the development of Okyeman. The anniversary theme, "25 Years of Sustainable Leadership and Services to Humanity," underscores his contributions over the past quarter-century.
During the launch at Kyebi, Okatakyie Boakye Danquah, the chairman of the anniversary planning committee and Okyeman Twafohene, lauded Okyenhene's leadership as a milestone for Okyeman. The event also saw the unveiling of the Silver Jubilee celebration logo.
Date and Activities
The celebration, spanning from May to December 2024, invites citizens, friends, and well-wishers to visit Ofori Panin Fie. The planning committee has organized a series of events, including:
- Planting 1 million trees as part of the Green Ghana Project on June 3, 2024.
- Five durbars across the Okyeman divisions: Adonten (Kukurantumi), Benkum (Begoro), Nifa (Asiakwa), Oseawuo (Wenkyi), Gyase (Kwaben), culminating in a grand durbar at Kyebi on July 20, 2024.
- A football gala, Asona Reunion, Okyeman Congress and Awards Night, Okyeman Fun and Food Fair at Kyebi Community Centre, a Golf Tournament, a non-denominational birthday thanksgiving service, a musical concert in December 2024, and a children's party.
Innovative Traditional Leadership
Okatakyie Danquah highlighted Osagyefuo Amoatia's reign as unparalleled in Okyeman’s history, emphasizing his role as a model of innovative traditional leadership. His tenure began amid significant challenges in the Eastern Region, including poor BECE performance, truancy, school dropouts, teenage pregnancy, and HIV spread.
Osagyefuo’s advocacy for education funding and parental involvement has led to notable improvements, including reduced dropout rates, teenage pregnancy, and HIV cases. The establishment of ten Amoatia Ofori Panin Model Schools and the University College of Agriculture, Environment, and Science (UCAES) at Bonsu are testaments to his commitment to education.
Danquah also praised Osagyefuo for restoring social order and resolving chieftaincy disputes, enhancing peace and stability in the region.
