NHIS Strong and Growing: Volta Regional Director Refutes Collapse Claims

In a resolute address at the 2023 Annual Performance Peer Review in Ho, Joseph Homenya, the Volta Regional Director of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), vehemently rebutted claims suggesting the collapse of Ghana's National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). Homenya affirmed that the scheme is thriving and fully capable of meeting the demands of service providers across the region.

"The NHIS is not collapsing; it is growing stronger by the day," stated Homenya, underscoring the scheme's robust performance amidst increasing utilization rates. He disclosed that members' utilization of medical services under NHIS totaled a substantial 26,001,400 visits within the review period, demonstrating high public trust and utilization.

Highlighting recent innovations, Homenya pointed to the digitization of NHIS systems as a pivotal enhancement aimed at improving service delivery. He also noted expansions in coverage, including the inclusion of treatments for chronic illnesses like breast cancer and renal conditions such as dialysis.

"In addition to digital upgrades, we have launched the MyNHIS mobile app and revamped our claims payment system to expedite service delivery," Homenya added, emphasizing the authority's commitment to enhancing user experience and accessibility.

Regarding infrastructure development, Homenya announced the establishment of new NHIA offices in underserved districts, aimed at decentralizing service provision and bringing healthcare closer to communities. He highlighted ongoing construction projects for new office complexes in strategic locations across the region, aimed at bolstering operational efficiency.

In his assessment of NHIS's impact, Homenya noted that active membership in the Volta Region reached 1,167,329 in 2023, representing a significant portion of the projected population. He credited the region's NHIA Secretariat for achieving top performance nationally in meeting targets and operational excellence, with Ketu North District receiving recognition as the best-performing district nationwide.

The affirmations by Homenya were echoed by Dr. Archibald Letsa, the Volta Regional Minister, who lauded NHIS as one of Ghana's most effective social interventions. Letsa dismissed criticisms on radio about NHIS effectiveness, attributing its success to President Kuffuor's initiation of the scheme, underscoring its pivotal role in Ghana's healthcare landscape.

In conclusion, the statements by Homenya and Letsa sought to dispel doubts and reaffirm the NHIS's resilience and efficacy in providing essential healthcare services to Ghanaians
