New Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence Opens at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital

The completion of the new Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) marks a significant milestone in the nation's healthcare infrastructure. This €38-million project, fully funded by the government, underscores Ghana's commitment to providing universal health coverage (UHC) and enhancing overall quality healthcare services for all citizens.

The state-of-the-art facility, spanning three stories, boasts a comprehensive range of services tailored to meet the needs of patients with genito-urinary conditions and kidney disorders. With a dedicated 31-bed dialysis suite and 70 beds for genito-urinary patients, the centre is poised to deliver advanced treatment and care to individuals with chronic and acute kidney failures, alongside offering nephrology services, including kidney transplants.

During a recent visit to the hospital, Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, the Minister of Health designate, emphasized the critical role of the new centre in addressing the existing gap in specialized urology and nephrology care within the country. He highlighted the transition from a proposed public-private partnership (PPP) model to an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) Turnkey model under an export credit arrangement (ECA), demonstrating the government's commitment to ensuring the project's success and sustainability.

Dr. Okoe-Boye also underscored the significance of transforming the Fevers Unit into a modern infectious disease center, aligning with Ghana's response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The revamped unit, completed in December last year, is equipped with cutting-edge facilities, including intensive care units, a state-of-the-art laboratory, counseling and consulting rooms, and specialized patient wards.

The new Urology and Nephrology Centre, coupled with the refurbished Fevers Unit, represents a crucial step forward in Ghana's healthcare landscape. It not only enhances access to specialized medical care but also underscores the government's unwavering commitment to safeguarding public health and well-being.

As the nation continues to prioritize healthcare investments, initiatives like these reaffirm Ghana's position as a leader in advancing healthcare infrastructure and services, ultimately benefiting communities across the country.
