Six things to do after loosing your iphone

Losing one’s phone is not just about the monetary loss but the potential loss of personal data, contacts, photos, and other important information stored on the device. There is often a feeling of vulnerability, especially if the iPhone is not backed up or secured with a passcode or biometric authentication.

It can also be inconvenient, disrupting communication and daily routines until a replacement is obtained. Overall, it is a mix of emotions ranging from annoyance to worry, depending on the circumstances and the value one places on the device and its contents.

There are a few things you can do if you lose your iPhone. After losing your device, it is important to take certain measures to safeguard your accounts, personal information, and the device itself. Different features can help you achieve this goal.

Mark is lost on iCloud.com

With your iCloud credentials (email and password), you can access iCloud.com/find from any device to mark your own as lost.

Apple disclosed in a blog post that you can utilise the Find Devices feature without needing a verification code, even if your trusted device is lost or stolen.

Simply choose the Find Devices option if prompted for a verification code after signing in with your Apple ID and password.

Your Apple ID, consisting of your email and password, is crucial for accessing iPhone functionalities, serving as an essential detail for every user.

When you designate your iPhone or iPad as lost, it enters Lost Mode. This involves locking the device with a passcode, suspending payment cards and passes used with Apple Pay, and allowing you to display a phone number and message for anyone who finds your device.

Here are a few steps, according to Apple:

Sign in to iCloud.com/find

Select your iPhone or iPad. If available, the map zooms in on your device’s location.

Select Mark As Lost, then follow the onscreen instructions to leave a phone number and message.

Select Activate to lock your iPhone or iPad with its existing passcode. If you have not set up a passcode, you will be prompted to create one.

It is important to note that if the “Find My” feature was not turned on for your device before it was lost or stolen, it won’t appear at iCloud.com/find or in the Find My app, and you can’t mark it as lost or remotely erase it.

Protecting your data

But you could still do something critical to protect your personal information. You should sign in to appleid.apple.com and change your Apple ID password right away.

When you select your iPhone, the map zooms in on its location.

The iPhone maker warned, “If your iPhone was stolen or it appears on the map at a location that you don’t recognise, such as an unfamiliar address, don’t try to recover the device yourself. Instead, contact local law enforcement.”

Stolen device protection

When the Stolen Device Protection feature is enabled, more delicate actions necessitate a security delay.

This includes a successful Face ID or Touch ID verification, followed by an hour’s wait, and then another successful biometric authentication.

The purpose of the security delay is to prevent anyone unauthorised from making adjustments to settings that might result in your iPhone or Apple ID account being locked.

Apple noted, “If your iPhone isn’t in a familiar location, you need to authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID to turn off Lost Mode.

“If you or someone else tried to change your Apple ID password on your iPhone at an unfamiliar location, your iPhone might not appear on the map at iCloud.com/find. You’re still able to mark it as lost to lock your device,” Apple stated.

Other ways to find your iPhone

Apple provided other options that could help any iPhone user in the same situation.

“If you have another Apple device—one that’s signed in with your Apple ID or one that belongs to a member of your Family Sharing group—you can use the Find My app to lock your iPhone or iPad and help you find it,” it revealed.

One can also use the Apple Watch to find a lost iPhone. If you have an Apple Watch, open Control Center and tap the Ping your iPhone button.

You can tap to play a sound on your iPhone or hold the button down to flash the iPhone flashlight, and you can even get directions to your phone’s location right on your watch.

Further, you could use the Find My app on another device. If you have another Apple device that’s signed in with your Apple ID, use Find My on that device to lock and find your iPhone or iPad.

Report your missing iPhone

According to Apple, there is the option of notifying your local law enforcement and providing them with the serial number of your iPhone or iPad, which you can retrieve even without having the device in your possession.

Reach out to your wireless carrier to report the loss of your iPhone, request the deactivation of your account, and inquire about filing a claim if your iPhone is covered under your wireless carrier plan.

Remotely erase your iPhone or iPad

Erasing your iPhone is the last option for any user who has lost his or her smartphone.

Before you erase your device, make sure that you’ve tried everything else to find it. Erasing your device can’t be undone.

The smartphone maker explained: “You can remotely erase your device using the Find My app or at iCloud.com/find.

“If your device has iOS 15 or later, or iPadOS 15 or later, you can still use Find My or iCloud.com/find to locate it after you erase it.

“If you have AppleCare+ with theft and loss, don’t remove the device from Find My or your Apple ID, even if you remotely erase it.”

Don’t remove your iPhone from Find My or your Apple ID until your claim has been fully approved.
