U.S. President Joe Biden has tested positive for COVID-19, the White House confirmed in a statement on Thursday. Despite being vaccinated and boosted, Biden is experiencing mild symptoms, according to White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
The positive test follows an event Biden attended in Nevada. He will be returning to his private residence in Delaware "where he will self-isolate and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time," Jean-Pierre said.
Biden’s physician noted that he has shown "upper respiratory symptoms" such as a runny nose and a cough. Pending the results of a PCR confirmation test, Biden has already received the first dose of the COVID drug Paxlovid.
At 81 years old, Biden, due to his age, is considered at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19. This is his second positive test, the first being two years ago when he experienced mild symptoms.
The latest development comes amid ongoing scrutiny of Biden's mental acuity and physical condition, especially concerning his potential second-term candidacy in the upcoming presidential elections in November.
