Asantehene Calls for Swift Completion of Hospital Projects in Ashanti Region

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has expressed concern over the slow progress of hospital projects in Ghana, particularly in the Ashanti Region, and has called for swift actions to complete these projects. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the health of the people, even in the face of financial constraints.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II made this call during a meeting with a delegation from the Ministry of Health, led by the sector Minister, Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi. This meeting was part of Dr. Okoe-Boye's working visit to the Ashanti Region.

"I have realized that things are improving in the financial sector," the Asantehene noted. "From now on, try and confer with the Finance Ministry to help raise money to complete the other projects in the country to see to it that the agenda 111 projects are completed on schedule."

The Asantehene cited the Sewua Hospital as an example of a project that should have been completed. He mentioned that while workers on site have attributed delays to power issues and road network problems, the government has already invested heavily in installing hospital equipment at the facility. He warned that these investments could go to waste if the operational issues are not resolved promptly.

"If hospitals such as the one at Sewua were in operation, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) could have sent some of its patients there to facilitate the smooth and uninterrupted implementation of the ‘Heal the KATH’ project," Otumfuo Osei Tutu II added. He also called for the fast-tracking of the KNUST Teaching Hospital's completion and stressed the need to prioritize ongoing works at Trede.

In response, Dr. Okoe-Boye commended the Asantehene for initiating the ‘Heal KATH’ project aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery. He assured that the government is committed to completing all ongoing health projects in the region.

During his visit, Dr. Okoe-Boye inspected the ongoing construction site of the KATH Maternity and Children’s block and emphasized the need to operationalize the Afari Military and Sewua hospitals to help decongest KATH. He suggested that the Ghana Health Service could sign a memorandum of understanding with the Teaching Hospital to direct some exceptional care services to facilities like Sewua Hospital, thereby easing pressure on KATH.

This call to action highlights the Asantehene’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure and services in the Ashanti Region, urging the government to expedite the completion of these critical projects for the benefit of the people.
