John Mahama Vows Cashless Transition for Ghana by 2028

In a bid to modernize Ghana's economy and streamline government operations, John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has unveiled ambitious plans to transition all government institutions to a cashless system by 2028 if he clinches victory in the upcoming elections.

Mahama emphasized that while the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has already embraced a cashless approach, his administration would extend this initiative to encompass all government agencies and select private institutions.

"We want to phase out cash as a form of all payments by 2028," Mahama asserted, highlighting the shift towards electronic payment methods such as mobile money for transactions related to public and certain private sector services.

Furthermore, Mahama reiterated his commitment to establishing a 24-hour economy, aiming to accelerate the nation's development trajectory. This strategic move, he believes, will inject dynamism into Ghana's economic landscape, fostering increased productivity and efficiency.

The proposed 24-hour economy, according to Mahama, hinges on bolstering security and public safety through substantial recruitment drives within both the security services and private security sectors.

Additionally, Mahama outlined cost-saving measures to be implemented under his administration, including the cessation of utility bill payments and other perks for government officials. Notably, only government vehicles engaged in official duties would be entitled to state-provided fuel under his proposed reforms.

"We will discontinue the payment of utility bills, fuel, DSTV, as conditions of service for top government officials," Mahama affirmed, underscoring his administration's commitment to promoting fiscal responsibility and equity.

As the election fervor intensifies, Mahama's ambitious agenda seeks to resonate with voters by promising a transformative vision for Ghana's future, anchored on innovation, efficiency, and inclusive growth.
