In a startling revelation, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has demanded an immediate investigation into the reported disappearance of critical election equipment from the Electoral Commission’s (EC) headquarters in Accra. This call, made during a press conference yesterday, underscores the party's grave concerns regarding the potential compromise of the upcoming December elections' integrity.

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the NDC, minced no words in condemning what he described as a "lackadaisical attitude" from EC officials regarding the missing equipment, including vital biometric machines. He emphasized that the situation not only poses a significant threat to electoral integrity but also reflects poorly on the EC's credibility.

According to Mr. Kwetey, the revelation of the missing equipment came to light thanks to a courageous whistleblower and subsequent investigations by NDC parliamentarians. He pointed fingers at what he called a government-led strategy to manipulate electoral processes, citing appointments of partisan officials to independent institutions like the judiciary and the EC.

The implications of the stolen equipment, Mr. Kwetey asserted, extend beyond mere financial loss. He highlighted the potential security risks associated with the theft, challenging the EC's assertions that the stolen laptops posed no significant threat as they required activation codes to interact with the electoral database.

To restore public trust and ensure electoral integrity, the NDC outlined a series of demands, including comprehensive investigations by independent bodies supplemented with international observers. They also called for a forensic audit of the voters' register and a thorough audit of the EC's inventory and security measures.

Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the Director of Elections for the NDC, emphasized that rebuilding trust necessitates transparency from the EC, urging them to address the party's concerns and cooperate with independent investigations.

As the nation braces itself for the December elections, the NDC's call for accountability and transparency in the electoral process reverberates across Ghana, underscoring the paramount importance of safeguarding democratic principles.
