Ministry of Youth and Sports Steps Up to Cover Black Bombers' Olympic Qualifiers Travel Expenses

In a much-needed relief for Ghana's national boxing team, the Black Bombers, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has announced its commitment to cover the travel expenses for their participation in the Olympic Games qualifiers in Bangkok.

The decision, unveiled by Ben Nunoo Mensah, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), follows a period of uncertainty and financial strain on the team. The ministry has agreed to shoulder the air tickets and per diem for the boxers, marking a significant development after prolonged silence regarding funding support.

Expressing gratitude for the ministry's commitment, Nunoo Mensah revealed that the GOC had already expended $20,000 on participation fees and accommodation costs for the athletes. However, he voiced disappointment at the burden placed on the GOC, emphasizing that such responsibilities should rightfully fall under the government's purview.

Nunoo Mensah criticized sports federations for relying on the committee rather than the ministry for financial support and slammed ministry authorities for neglecting their obligations in securing funding for athletes' participation in competitions.

The GOC president disclosed that approximately $65,000 had been spent on the boxers' qualifiers, further highlighting the financial strain on the committee. He questioned the allocation of funds, noting a disproportionate emphasis on football over other sports.

With the boxers scheduled to depart for Bangkok by May 21, Nunoo Mensah urged them to gather for training at the Bukom Boxing Arena to commence preparations before their departure.

The ministry's commitment to covering the remaining expenses ensures that the Black Bombers can compete in the Olympic qualifiers without financial constraints, marking a crucial step in their journey towards Olympic success.
