Malicious Acts Target SNCF High-Speed Network Ahead of Paris Olympics
Just hours before the Paris Olympics opening ceremony, SNCF's high-speed rail network has been targeted by malicious acts, causing significant disruptions and cancellations.
Just hours before the highly anticipated opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, the French rail company SNCF reported that its high-speed network has been targeted by "malicious acts" aimed at paralyzing the system. Several high-speed TGV lines to the west, north, and east of Paris have been affected, leading to significant disruptions and queues forming at Gare Montparnasse station, which serves destinations to the west of the capital.
Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete has strongly condemned these "criminal acts," emphasizing that they would disrupt many people's holiday plans. "These actions are unacceptable and have a profound impact on both our citizens and the international guests arriving for the Olympics," Vergriete stated.
The disruptions have already led to the cancellation of several trains, and SNCF has warned that the situation could persist "at least all weekend while repairs are conducted." The company revealed that fires had been set with the intent to damage its facilities, a claim supported by a source close to the investigation who described the incidents as acts of "sabotage."
Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra also expressed her dismay, calling the attacks "downright appalling." She added that the full impact on the public and Olympic athletes was still being assessed, indicating the potential for further complications as the global event kicks off.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working diligently to restore normalcy and ensure the safety and efficiency of the high-speed rail network. The timing of these malicious acts, coinciding with the influx of visitors for the Olympics, has added a layer of urgency to the situation.
