Kenya’s President Defends Use of Private Plane to US Amid Criticism
resident William Ruto defends his use of a private plane to the US, stating it cost $73,000, amid public criticism and scrutiny over government spending.
In response to public outcry, Kenya’s President William Ruto has defended his use of a private plane for a recent trip to the United States, stating it only cost about 10 million shillings ($73,000; £60,000). He refuted claims of extravagance, asserting the plane was offered at a reduced rate by "some friends" of Kenya when he had initially planned to fly via the national airline to cut costs.
Speaking at a National Prayer Breakfast in Nairobi, President Ruto emphasized that the expenditure was far from the alleged $1.5 million cost to hire the Boeing 737-700 VIP plane. “I am not a mad man," he declared, countering the reported figures and criticism.
The controversy stems from President Ruto's three-day official state visit to the US, marking the first such trip by an African leader in over 15 years. During the visit, Kenya secured investment deals worth billions of dollars. Upon his return, President Ruto addressed concerns over the trip’s expenses, maintaining that the luxury jet was more economical than flying with Kenya Airways, though he did not disclose specific amounts.
President Ruto explained that after being quoted approximately $530,000 for the cheapest plane, he instructed his office to book Kenya Airways for himself and his 30-person entourage. However, upon learning of his plans to fly commercially, some friends offered a private plane at a significantly reduced cost of $73,000.
“We have built a big reputation as a country and we have built friends… I said I was not ready to pay more than [$153m]. They said bring [$73,000] we'll give you the plane,” he elaborated, insisting on leading by example in financial prudence.
Despite his reassurances, the debate persists. Many Kenyans are questioning the propriety of accepting such an offer and the identities of these “friends.” Comments on social media highlight concerns over potential geopolitical implications and the transparency of such gifts.
This controversy occurs amid ongoing scrutiny over government spending and tax policies since President Ruto assumed office in 2022. His administration has faced backlash for raising and implementing new taxes, intensifying public dissatisfaction.
