I'll find engineering solutions to persistent flooding issues - John Mahama

John Dramani Mahama, the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has committed to finding engineering solutions to tackle the persistent flooding issues in Accra if he is re-elected as President in the upcoming December elections.

In a Facebook post on Monday, May 27, 2024, Mahama outlined his vision for an effective prevention and management plan aimed at addressing the flooding crisis. His plan includes investing in sustainable drainage systems, clearing structures in waterways, implementing proper waste management, and taking proactive measures to mitigate the impact of heavy rains.

“We cannot afford to continue risking the lives and livelihoods of our people. It is time for real change and real solutions,” Mahama stated emphatically.

Mahama also criticized the current government's handling of the flood situation, highlighting what he described as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration’s failure to manage and prevent floods effectively. He expressed deep concern over the absence of a comprehensive flood prevention and management plan, noting that areas previously unaffected by flooding are now inundated with even minimal rainfall.

Despite significant expenditures, including a reported $200 million on the Greater Accra Resilient Integrated Development Programme (GARID), Mahama lamented that the impact of these funds is not evident, pointing out recent distressing flooding incidents. He revealed that an additional $150 million has been approved for the same program, questioning the efficacy of these investments.

Mahama stressed the urgent need for change and collective action: “We cannot afford to continue risking the lives and livelihoods of our people. It is time for real change and real solutions. Let us, as Ghanaians, as a community, unite and work together to build a safer and more resilient Ghana.”

The recent heavy downpours in Accra and other parts of the country have led to extensive property damage and, tragically, the death of a young schoolboy. These events have underscored the government's shortcomings in flood management and prevention.

Mahama’s proposed initiatives, if he returns to power, are aimed at safeguarding lives and properties through sustainable and innovative solutions. His call to action emphasizes the need for unity and proactive measures to build a resilient nation.
