wenty health personnel from across Ghana have been selected for the second cohort of the Emergency Preparedness and Response to Pandemic short course, organized by the Africa Higher Education Health Collaborative at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation.

The course aims to equip participants with essential skills to effectively respond to emergencies and pandemics. It falls under the Health Employment pillar of the Collaborative, led by Dr. Kofi Akohene Mensah.

At the opening ceremony, Prof. Ellis Owusu-Dabo, Principal Investigator of the Collaborative, highlighted the critical role of pandemic preparedness in transforming Ghana’s health system. Prof. Peter Donkor, President of the West African College of Surgeons, emphasized the necessity of training staff in emergency planning and response to mitigate the severe impacts of disease outbreaks on health, communities, and the economy.

“We owe it to ourselves to deepen our knowledge and sharpen the skills needed to protect ourselves and our country,” said Prof. Donkor.

Mr. Andrews Kwasi Boateng, Registrar of KNUST, urged participants to remain in Ghana and serve their communities, emphasizing their potential contributions to the nation. "We need you to stay in Ghana and serve your communities. You have a lot to offer for the country," he stated.

The course is conducted in collaboration with the University of Toronto. Dr. Kimberly de-Souza, the team lead from the University of Toronto, encouraged participants and facilitators to embrace curiosity to achieve the course objectives. “I want to give all participants and facilitators one task, and that is to be curious. Let us embrace the opportunity to be curious. Learn from each other so that we can build connections that transcend our borders and create a lasting impact in our communities,” she said.

The Africa Higher Education Health Collaborative, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, aims to advance healthcare in Africa through three pillars: Health Employment, Health Entrepreneurship, and Health Ecosystem.
