Ghanaian YouTuber Kwadwo Sheldon Opposes Government's Proposal to Tax Foreign Income
Kwadwo Sheldon, a popular Ghanaian YouTuber, expresses his disagreement with the Ghana Revenue Agency's proposal to tax Ghanaians earning foreign income, particularly targeting content creators and influencers on global platforms like YouTube and Instagram.
In a recent interview with BBC's Daniel Dadzie, Kwadwo Sheldon voiced his concerns regarding the potential taxation of foreign income earned by Ghanaians. The Ghana Revenue Agency (GRA) had previously announced plans to implement taxes on individuals earning foreign income, encompassing bloggers, brand influencers, and content creators operating on international platforms.
Sheldon argued that such taxation could severely impact the burgeoning content creation industry in Ghana, which is still in its developmental stages. He highlighted the challenges content creators face in monetizing their content on platforms like Facebook and Instagram due to existing taxes and deductions, expressing worry that additional taxation would further diminish their earnings.
The YouTuber emphasized that content creators already contribute to the tax system through alternative means such as advertising for brands and paying taxes on employee wages. He suggested that instead of imposing additional taxes, the government should negotiate with platforms like Facebook to enable monetization in Ghana, following the examples set by Nigeria and Kenya.
Sheldon asserted that facilitating monetization would incentivize content creators to produce more, ultimately benefiting both the creators and the government in the long term. He urged the government to exempt content creators from the proposed tax, emphasizing that the creator economy is not yet robust enough to withstand such financial burdens.
