The Ghanaian Parliament is set to resume its legislative functions on Friday, May 17, 2024, as per a summons issued by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin. This development comes in response to calls from the majority caucus for an early reconvening of parliamentary sessions.
The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, invoked Article 112(3) and Order 53 of the Standing Orders of Parliament, which authorize 15 percent of the members of the House to request an early recall of parliament. Subsequently, the agenda for the upcoming sitting on May 17 is anticipated to center around critical government business, notably the endorsement of a recent appointments committee report and a motion for additional funding.
The Speaker's summons, in compliance with Article 112(3) of the Ghanaian constitution and Orders 53(1) & (2) of the parliamentary standing orders, was formalized through a statement issued by his office on May 10. The statement, emanating from the Office of the Speaker of Parliament in Accra, reads: "Pursuant to Article 112(3) of the Constitution of the Republic and Order 53(1) & (2) of the Standing Orders of Parliament, I, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, do hereby summon Parliament to sit on Friday, 17th May, 2024 at ten o'clock in the forenoon, at Parliament House, Accra."
With parliamentary sessions set to resume, attention is focused on the forthcoming deliberations and legislative actions that will shape the national agenda in the days ahead.
