Urgent Call: Ghana's Missing Biometric Devices Spark Electoral Integrity Concerns
The Minority in Parliament has raised alarm over the disappearance of seven biometric devices belonging to Ghana's Electoral Commission, expressing fears of potential electoral compromise. Urging swift action from authorities, they stress the critical need for transparency and accountability in the investigative process to safeguard the integrity of future elections.
In a press conference held on Tuesday, March 19, the Minority in Parliament voiced their apprehension over the disappearance of seven biometric devices belonging to the Electoral Commission (EC). Led by Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the group emphasized the critical need for expedited investigations to prevent any potential compromise to the integrity of the upcoming 2024 general elections.
The missing biometric devices, intended for voter registration and verification, were designated for use ahead of the EC's limited voters' registration exercise. The revelation of their disappearance has raised significant concerns among parliamentary members, who fear adverse implications for the electoral process.
Dr. Forson underscored the urgency of the situation, urging the Ghana Police Service's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to swiftly ascertain the whereabouts of the missing devices. He emphasized the necessity for transparency in the investigative process, urging authorities to promptly provide updates to the public regarding their progress.
Expressing grave concerns over the potential misuse of the biometric devices, Dr. Forson warned of the grave consequences if they fell into the wrong hands. He highlighted the possibility of political interference and underscored the imperative for preventive measures to safeguard the integrity of future elections.
"The Electoral Commission confirms that seven biometric devices are indeed missing. I urge the CID and the Ghana Police Service to immediately issue a statement giving us details of their investigations so far," Dr. Forson stated during the press conference.
The Minority's call for action underscores the significance of addressing the issue with urgency to uphold the democratic process and ensure free and fair elections in Ghana. As the investigation unfolds, stakeholders remain vigilant, emphasizing the importance of accountability and transparency in safeguarding electoral integrity.
