In a significant step towards achieving universal health coverage (UHC) by 2030, Ghana has unveiled an ambitious eight-year financing strategy aimed at fortifying the nation's health system. The newly introduced Ghana Health Financing Strategy (2023-2030) represents a comprehensive approach to tackle persistent challenges in health financing, critical for meeting health-related objectives in the country.

Jointly initiated by the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation (WHO), the strategic document emphasizes efficiency, expenditure management, and addressing critical revenue issues. It was officially launched at the Ministry of Health's headquarters in Accra, marking a pivotal moment in Ghana's journey towards UHC.

The strategy prioritizes strengthening the procurement of primary healthcare services at grassroots levels, while enhancing provider autonomy, management, and accountability in fund utilization. Dr. Okoe Boye, representing the President at the Ministry, highlighted the strategy's alignment with international standards, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the African Union Agenda 2063, and global initiatives like the UHC 2030 Compact.

Moreover, the strategy aligns with key declarations such as the Declaration on Primary Health Care in Astana (2018) and the Political Declaration of UHC adopted at the UN High-Level Meeting in September 2019. Dr. Boye affirmed the Ministry's commitment to implementing the strategy, citing ongoing reviews of essential health services packages and tariff adjustments within the National Health Insurance Scheme.

Dr. Frank John Lule, the Officer in charge of the WHO Country Office, praised the timely launch of the strategy, coinciding with Ghana's rollout of crucial measures towards achieving UHC. He reiterated the commitment of development partners to support the government in building a robust health system with sustainable financing at its core.

The launch of the Ghana Health Financing Strategy signals a proactive approach by the government and its partners in addressing systemic challenges and advancing towards equitable healthcare for all citizens.
