Grant of CAD 28,750 Propels Bolgatanga Technical University's Gender Equity Project
Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) secures a grant of CAD 28,750 from Global Affairs Canada to launch its Gender Equity Project aimed at addressing gender-related issues and promoting women's rights within the university community.
Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU), situated in the Upper East Region, has received a significant boost in its efforts to address gender-related issues and promote women's rights within its campus community. The university secured a grant totaling CAD 28,750, courtesy of Global Affairs Canada, to spearhead its ambitious "Gender Equity Project."
Administered through the esteemed Youth Challenge International (YCI), a global youth development Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), this financial injection aims to bridge the gender gap prevalent within the institution. The project, operating under the banner of the Partner Innovation Fund (PIF), marks a pivotal step in the university's commitment to fostering inclusivity and equality among its staff and students.
At its core, the Gender Equity Project seeks to enhance the capacity and awareness of gender issues and women's rights among BTU's faculty and student body. Through the implementation of robust gender and sexual harassment policies, complemented by comprehensive training sessions, the university endeavors to create a safe and equitable environment for all members of its community.
Professor Daniel Azerikatoa Ayoung, the Project Lead, emphasized the necessity of these initiatives, particularly in the wake of the university's transition from a polytechnic to a technical institution. He underscored the importance of developing clear guidelines to navigate gender-related challenges effectively, advocating for the mainstreaming of gender equality across all university activities.
Central to the project's objectives is the accessibility and dissemination of the university's gender and sexual harassment policy. By ensuring that staff and students at all levels are well-versed in the contents of the policy and equipped with the knowledge to report abuses, BTU aims to foster a culture of accountability and support within its ranks.
In addressing the pressing issue of sexual harassment, Professor Ayoung acknowledged the existing gaps in reporting mechanisms within the university. He emphasized the need for a streamlined process to empower victims to come forward and seek redress, thereby fostering a more conducive and respectful learning and working environment.
The Gender Equity Project stands as a testament to BTU's unwavering commitment to promoting gender equality and championing the rights of women within its academic community. Through collaborative efforts and proactive measures, the university endeavors to pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
