Ga Mantse Orders Closure of Shops for Homowo Clean-Up in Accra
Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, mandates closure of businesses on July 2 for a city-wide clean-up initiative aimed at enhancing waste management and environmental cleanliness in Accra.
In a bid to promote environmental stewardship and bolster sanitation efforts in Accra, Ga Mantse King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II has announced a mandatory closure of all shops and businesses on July 2. This directive is part of the Homowo Clean-Up initiative aimed at fostering community responsibility towards waste management and environmental cleanliness.
The initiative, themed “Let’s Keep Accra Clean,” is a collaborative effort between the Ga Traditional Council (GTC) and various governmental bodies, covering all 25 local government authorities within the Greater Accra Region. It includes comprehensive strategies such as household registration for organized waste collection services, educational campaigns on effective waste management techniques, and strict enforcement of sanitation bylaws.
Launching the initiative at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II stressed the non-partisan nature of environmental cleanliness, urging residents to actively participate in keeping their surroundings clean. He called for adherence to sanitation regulations, including the cleaning of premises and gutters, and proposed the reintroduction of communal labor to reinforce public awareness on sanitation issues.
To ensure compliance, a dedicated task force will oversee enforcement, with provisions for the arrest and prosecution of violators of sanitation bylaws. The Ga Mantse also called upon local authorities to strategically place refuse bins across the city.
An innovative aspect of the campaign involves sanitation competitions among schools, communities, markets, and transport hubs, with awards aimed at encouraging cleanliness and community pride.
Accra Mayor Elizabeth K.T. Sackey praised the initiative, emphasizing its significance for public health and safety. She underscored the collaborative efforts between governmental ministries and the Ga Traditional Council, highlighting their commitment to creating a cleaner environment in Accra.
Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Deputy Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, commended King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II for his leadership in promoting cleanliness in Accra, noting the cultural importance of the Homowo festival in reinforcing community values.
Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources Lydia Seyram Alhassan affirmed the ministry’s readiness for the clean-up exercise, detailing logistical preparations including specialized trucks, personnel, and enforcement teams.
Regional Minister Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover expressed gratitude to the Ga Traditional Council for initiating the campaign, assuring phased implementation starting from July 2 to achieve sustainable cleanliness across Accra.
The Homowo Clean-Up initiative represents a significant step towards enhancing environmental hygiene in Accra, reflecting a collective commitment towards a greener and healthier urban environment.
