Electoral Commission Urges Political Parties to Prioritize Electoral Integrity

The Electoral Commission (EC) has issued a statement calling for the cooperation of all political parties in ensuring the smooth administration of electoral processes, including the ongoing voter registration exercise. In response to a request from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to release the serial numbers of Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits currently in use, the EC has declined, citing security risks.

Acting Director of Public Affairs, Michael Boadu, emphasized the EC's commitment to conducting elections independently and impartially. The Commission stressed the importance of maintaining the integrity and security of electoral processes, highlighting the unique serial numbers assigned to each BVR kit, crucial for their functionality and tracking.

Releasing these serial numbers to external parties, including political entities, was deemed a substantial risk to electoral security. The EC underscored the transparency of the ongoing registration exercise, pointing to measures such as gazetted registration centers, presence of political party polling agents, and provision of registration reports.

While emphasizing transparency, the EC reiterated the necessity of safeguarding electoral systems from potential risks. Political parties were assured access to registration data and opportunities to raise concerns during the exhibition of the provisional register. The EC's decision to withhold BVR kit serial numbers reflects its dedication to upholding electoral integrity amidst evolving challenges.
