Minority in Parliament Endorses ‘Hands Off Our Hotel’ Demonstration Against SSNIT Hotel Sale
The Minority in Parliament has announced its full endorsement of today's ‘Hands off Our Hotel’ demonstration against the sale of SSNIT-owned hotels to Rock City Hotel, starting at Labadi Beach Hotel and proceeding to Jubilee House.
In a significant move of solidarity, the Minority in Parliament has thrown its weight behind the ‘Hands off Our Hotel’ demonstration scheduled for today, June 18. This protest, organized in response to the impending sale of 60% shares in several state-owned hotels to Rock City Hotel, is set to commence at the iconic Labadi Beach Hotel and culminate at Jubilee House, Ghana’s seat of government.
The controversial sale, orchestrated by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), includes prominent properties such as Labadi Beach Hotel, LA Palm Royal Beach Resort, Ride Royal Hotel, and Elmina Beach Resort. Despite mounting opposition, SSNIT has proceeded with finalizing the transaction, prompting outcry from various quarters.
Chief Whip Governs Kwame Agbodza, speaking on behalf of the Minority, emphasized the public’s role in safeguarding these national assets. "We urge the public to join us in this demonstration to halt the sale of these hotels," Agbodza stated firmly, citing concerns over the sale's implications for Ghana's heritage and the welfare of hotel employees.
The Minority contends that the decision to divest these assets is ill-conceived and not in the best interest of the Ghanaian populace. The protest aims to exert pressure on the government to reconsider its stance and uphold public ownership of these strategic assets.
"We, therefore, want to use this opportunity to indicate the Minority’s strong opposition to the sale of these hotels to the Minister of Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, and urge the public to join Tuesday’s ‘Hands Off Our Hotels Demonstration’ to send a strong signal to the government that the people of Ghana take exception to this shady deal. Enough is enough!" Agbodza proclaimed.
The impending sale has sparked nationwide debate, with critics arguing that transferring ownership of profitable state-owned enterprises to private entities undermines national interests. As tensions escalate, today’s demonstration is poised to amplify dissent and compel the government to reconsider its decision.
