Dr Naomi Adjepong — Director, Alpha Beta School

The STEM35 Legacy Project, initiated by Alpha Beta School in Dansoman municipality, Accra, aims to bolster Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in basic and junior high schools. This endeavor, launched with the goal of raising $350,000, focuses on establishing a STEM Centre of Excellence at Alpha Beta School.

Key components of the project's first phase include the refurbishment of science labs, upgrading IT facilities, and introducing a physical science hub. Dr. Naomi Adjepong, the school's Director, announced these developments during the school’s annual Founders' Day celebration.

Community engagement is central to the project's vision, with initiatives designed to benefit both Alpha Beta students and the local community. These initiatives include:

  1. Introducing STEMROBO, a weekly subject covering Coding, Robotics, and AI, for students in Years one – nine.
  2. Launching the STEM Champions program, a 10-week STEM immersion initiative offering practical workshops, guest speaker sessions, and industrial tours.
  3. Hosting practical sessions in the science lab for 140 JHS students from the AME Zion School to enhance their understanding of scientific concepts.
  4. Spearheading the STEM Champions Programme for girls in JHS two and three to encourage their participation in STEM education.

Looking ahead, the project aims to implement further technology upgrades, including improved Internet infrastructure and the establishment of an Innovation Lab and Maker Space within the year. Alpha Beta School plans to increase its participation in local and international STEM competitions to provide more opportunities for students.

Dr. Adjepong invites potential partners, stakeholders, and organizations to collaborate on shaping the future of STEM education. The institution actively seeks new partnerships to enhance the impact of the STEM35 Legacy Project and explores creative fundraising initiatives.
