Record Number of Asylum Seekers Arrive in Britain

On Tuesday, more than 800 asylum seekers arrived in Britain via small boats, marking the highest single-day figure since late 2022. This surge adds to the mounting pressure on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak ahead of the July 4 national election.

Provisional data from Britain's interior ministry revealed that 882 migrants arrived on Tuesday, pushing the yearly total to over 12,300. The last time a higher daily figure was recorded was in November 2022, when 947 migrants arrived in a single day.

With the opposition Labour Party significantly ahead in opinion polls and immigration a major concern for some voters, Prime Minister Sunak has made "stopping the boats" and curbing illegal migration a central pledge of his administration. The cornerstone of Sunak's immigration strategy is a controversial plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda, aiming to deter migrants from making the perilous journey across the English Channel from France.

However, the early election call has hindered the implementation of this plan. The Labour Party, which currently leads by about 20 points in opinion polls, has vowed to abolish the Rwanda policy if it gains power. Instead, Labour proposes establishing a Border Security Command. This new entity would integrate staff from the police, domestic intelligence agencies, and prosecutors, working in tandem with international bodies to combat people smuggling more effectively.

As the election approaches, the handling of immigration and asylum seekers remains a pivotal issue, with both major parties offering starkly different approaches to addressing the challenge.
