NPP Initially Opposed Bawumia as Akufo-Addo's Running Mate
Nana Ohene Ntow, a Senior Campaign Advisor to Alan Kyerematen, has revealed that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) initially opposed Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s selection as Akufo-Addo’s running mate. This opposition was disclosed in an interview on Channel One TV.
In a recent interview on Channel One TV, Nana Ohene Ntow, a Senior Campaign Advisor to Alan Kyerematen and former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), revealed that the party's leadership initially resisted Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s nomination as the running mate to then-candidate Akufo-Addo.
According to Ntow, the party's top brass, including himself, vehemently opposed Bawumia's selection, questioning why an outsider was being considered for such a crucial role. “The interesting thing about Bawumia’s eight years as Vice President is that, when I was the General Secretary and Akufo-Addo came as a candidate to propose Bawumia as running mate, we said ‘what are you talking about? The man is not a member of the party. And you are telling us that in this whole big party, you can’t find a running mate? There was a fight at the Alisa Hotel,” Ntow recounted.
He further explained that Akufo-Addo had to persuade the party to accept Bawumia by highlighting his economic expertise and promising to entrust him with the country’s economy if elected. President Kufuor also intervened, urging the party to consider Akufo-Addo’s proposal to avoid future regret.
Before the 2016 general elections, Dr. Bawumia was widely acclaimed as the Economic Messiah, expected to rescue Ghana from its economic challenges. He delivered several public lectures, sharply criticizing the Economic Management Team of the then Mahama administration.
However, nearly eight years into his tenure as the head of the Economic Management Team, sections of the public have expressed disappointment, arguing that Bawumia has not met the high expectations set for him.
This revelation by Nana Ohene Ntow sheds light on the internal dynamics and initial reservations within the NPP regarding Dr. Bawumia’s rise to prominence within the party and his role in the government.
