Vice-President Bawumia Promises Focus on Mechanised Commercial Agriculture and Technology to Boost Food Production
Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia pledges to boost mechanised commercial agriculture and technology application to increase food production in Ghana, while addressing chiefs in the Upper East Region.
Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged to focus on mechanised commercial agriculture and the application of technology to increase food production in Ghana. He emphasized the need for large-scale commercial farming and the adoption of appropriate technology to help farmers cultivate enough produce to lower food prices.
“Although we have vast arable lands together with the required water resources, we lack the application of the needed technology to bolster the growth and development of the agricultural sector,” he stressed.
Dr. Bawumia highlighted the potential of the White Volta region in northern Ghana, where vast lands could be utilized for large-scale farming to enhance the nation’s food supply.
Courtesy Call
Dr. Bawumia made these remarks during a courtesy call on the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs in Bolgatanga last Friday, as part of a day-long tour of the region. Earlier, he interacted with the clergy, Imams, and Zango chiefs. He also held a community durbar with small-scale miners in Gbane, a mining community in Talensi, before concluding with a youth connect event at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Hall in Bolgatanga.
Pwalugu Dam Project
Touching on the Pwalugu multi-purpose dam project, Dr. Bawumia reiterated his commitment to the initiative, which is expected to benefit residents of the Upper East and North-East regions. He stated, “I am of a firm belief that we are going to execute the project as it would put about 28,000 hectares of land under irrigation, generate electricity, and end perennial flooding caused by the opening of the Bagre dam in Burkina Faso.”
Formalising Small-Scale Mining
As the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party for this year’s general election, Dr. Bawumia pledged to formalise small-scale mining by issuing licenses to miners, ensuring they operate in an environmentally safe manner. He added that the Mineral Development Bank would assist small-scale miners in acquiring the necessary equipment, thereby reducing illegal mining activities.
Road Reconstruction Appeal
The President of the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs, Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III, commended Dr. Bawumia for prioritising the agricultural sector to revive the economy. He appealed for the reconstruction of the main road linking the Upper East Region to the Upper West Region, which is in a deplorable state, posing a danger to motorists and other road users.
“The road is currently in a deplorable state and needs urgent attention. It is an important road that links the two regions and it must be prioritised to facilitate easy movement of people and ensure safety for commuters,” he stated.
